CREAKING PAWS: TREATMENT FOR DOG ARTHRITIS
Even those of us who do not have dogs at home know that man’s best friend is highly prone to arthritis. How many times have you seen a dog that moves as though its joints are not quite in working order? This is particularly true of older and/or overweight dogs that are largely inactive physically. Sound familiar? It might, because that is just the kind of life that brings on arthritis in humans, too. These days, we call arthritis a lifestyle disease with reason.
Happens to all of us
In fact, arthritis in dogs is very similar to arthritis in us, in that it is a crippling, degenerative disease that causes stiffness of the joints and muscles. And as in humans, arthritis in dogs is fairly common because joints will, in the normal course of things, suffer quite a bit of wear and tear. And also as in humans, arthritis - most commonly osteoarthritis - in dogs can be an immensely painful ailment which, if not treated, causes great distress.
Age factor
And the worst thing is that dog arthritis can afflict dogs of any age. Yes, older dogs are more vulnerable to it, but that doesns’t mean younger dogs will not get it at all. For example, a young dog that has been in an accident or has sustained some kind of injury is also prone to develop canine arthritis. And then there are infections and diseases that can bring on arthritis, such as the ailment known as hip dysplasia, which is a common cause of limping in dogs, and which may lead to arthritis later on.

First steps
Obviously, if your dog displays symptoms of arthritis, the first thing to do is to visit a vet. The administration of the right kind of medication is very important, because like human arthritis, dog arthritis is not entirely curable, but, given the right kind of medication, it can be kept in check.
Of course, one of the most effective ways to combat dog arthritis is to give your dog plenty of exercise, which may sound paradoxical since exercise will cause increased joint movement, but is actually of great help. That is because the exercises are not meant to be vigorous physical workouts, which will no doubt worsen the condition, but perhaps a steady walk, which releases lubricating fluids for the joints and aid their smooth movement.
See it coming
There are also, of course, over-the-counter medicines that can at least help alleviate the pain of dog arthritis, though as we have already said, there is no permanent cure. But these medications are best prescribed by the vet. And a vet is also your best bet for preventive measures, which really are the best ways to treat dog arthritis. So, assuming that dogs have an average life span of 14 years, if your pet is approaching 10, you should know that it’s time to ask your vet about ways to keep your dog healthy so that dog arthritis cannot strike.
