How You Can Stop Your Dog From Chewing
Almost everybody that has ever had a dog has forfited up some socks, slippers or the corner of their favorite chair to the chewing routine of their friendly canine. When it comes to your pets chewing, the question should be how can I redirect the chewing not how can I halt the chewing.
Stopping your dogs chewing is not going to be eliminated totally . Chewing is something your dog needs to do.
Being your dog is going to chew, give him plenty of things to choose from.
Begin by providing him with all kinds of gnaw toys. Be sure that you put as many different items as you can in the areas that he spends most of his time. This should speed things along and help to keep your pet from gnawing on the expensive items.
Look the toys over every once in awhile and toss the ones that are wearing out. In order for your dog to find a toy that he really enjoys, you may have to try different types.
Ranting and raving when your dog is chews on anything is not a very good long term solution. Punishment is out, positive reinforcement is in.
Just as you see your pet begin to chew on the chair boldly say”AHHHHHH” and give him the chew toy. Give your dog a pet and praise whenever they choose a toy over something else.
There are also a few ways to make the chewing unpleasant for your dog.
There is something called a scat mat. Place the mats where you do not want your dog to go. The scat mat has harmless plastic spikes that your dog will avoid.
There is the option of putting a certain unpleasant tasting formula on those few things he chews on that he is not supposed to. Your local pet store may have these things. While the above options may not be all that great it is another way to go.
You are not going to halt your dog from chewing but you can direct him towards chewing the proper things.
