Training An Aggressive Dog – The Do’s And Dont’s
All dogs have the possibility of being aggressive. Many believe that all dogs of a certain breed are naturally aggressive but the truth is the ones believed to be aggressive are the ones that people often train to be mean.
Lets take the pit bull breed for example. In the long and short of it pit bulls are not overly aggressive by themselves. In fact they can be very mild tempered and sweet dogs. However people love to train the pit bull to be a mean aggressive dog.
While all dogs of a breed are not aggressive all dogs have their own distinct personality. If you find yourself with an aggressive dog then you need to take precautions for your safety and the safety of any children you have.
So what can you do about having an aggressive dog besides wondering “is my dog aggressive“?
Well besides getting your dog safe obeidience training, it depends on how aggressive they are and what it is that gets them going.
One of the common signs dogs exhibit is the getting down low to the ground and barking. It is usually best to just pretend that your dog is not even there when they do this. The worst thing you can do is look them in the eye because by doing that you are issuing a challenge and it will turn into a game of who is in control.
Never try to grab your dog or show your dominance when this happens or it will turn into a game of who is in charge. Once it turns into a game you will have an incredibly hard time breaking him of it.
If your dog has a food aggression then it is best to stay in the same room with him while he is eating his meals. Do not touch an aggressive dog when he is eating. Start out by staying on the other side of the room while he eats and slowly get closer every meal.
Always use your best judgment when doing this and pay very close attention to the signs your dog is giving you. If he is getting agitated then do not get any closer to him.
When you have a very aggressive dog the best thing you can do is to use caution when around your dog and talk to a dog trainer to get the best advice on how to handle your individual situation and to get more information on training aggressive dogs.
